Overview
Death rides a pale horse through a landscape where bishop, king, child, and maiden alike must submit. The sun rises between two towers in the distance, promising that the new day comes regardless. A herald of the card is not the reaper of legend but a-transition figure — Death does not kill, Death escorts. A river flows on the right and a ship sits on it, both invoking the river Styx and the crossings of the soul. The banner Death carries shows the white rose of the Fool, suggesting that endings make possible new beginnings. The number 13 reduces to 4 (1+3), the number of the Emperor — every ending initiates a new structure. When this card appears, transformation is at hand.
